OverviewBackground
Over the past four years working at the gallery, I have interacted with many visitors, and I’ve noticed that many of them feel hesitant to initiate a conversation. When we’re busy, it becomes challenging to approach and assist every visitor proactively. To help with navigation, we usually print out floor plans of the exhibition space, but many visitors find it difficult to interpret them. As a result, it becomes challenging to provide detailed explanations about the exhibition.

Project ChallengeThis is why I care
Many visitors to the gallery hesitate to initiate conversations or feel apprehensive about approaching us. They often seek information about the artworks, including their availability for purchase, and frequently struggle to navigate the exhibition layout. As curators, we take the initiative to provide explanations and personally guide visitors to specific works. However, during peak hours, effectively managing and assisting every visitor becomes increasingly challenging, highlighting the need for a more structured approach to visitor engagement.

	User Research Research Insights
Pain Points - Shy Visitors“Whenever I go to a gallery, I’m curious about the artist's information or the price, but I’m worried it might have already been sold or that they might not answer me, so I hesitate to ask.”
“Even when I look at the paper exhibition layout, there are no pictures, and I get confused about where everything is located, so I can’t really figure it out.”Pain Points - Curators“It’s really disappointing when there are too many people or when things get too busy, and I can’t attend to the clients properly. To sell an artwork, I need to provide enough information about the price and the artist, but there’s just not enough time.”“When there are many visitors, it becomes difficult to guide each one individually on the location of artworks because the gallery is multi-story and spacious.”

ChallengeProblem Statement

How might we design an innovative platform that leverages immersive technology to connect curators and visitors, making artwork exploration more engaging, accessible, and intuitive?

Aspiration“As curators, when we are too busy, we don’t have enough time to fully explain the artworks to each visitor. Moreover, if a visitor takes the wrong path, guiding them properly and escorting them to the correct artwork can be challenging because the gallery is large and spread across multiple floors.”
Frustration
When a large number of visitors arrive at once, it's frustrating that we can't provide enough guidance about the artworks. If visitors take the wrong path, escorting each one individually is nearly impossible due to the gallery's vast space and multiple floors.

	ReflectionTakeaway
If I had the technical skills to directly code the AR features, I believe I could have increased the implementation rate of these functionalities. The process of combining AR technology with user experience design was both exciting and challenging. If I had more time, I would focus on adding features that allow users to immediately purchase artworks that are ready for sale. This would not only improve the user experience but also potentially increase sales and revenue.

That MICA VibeWhat does this mean for the MICA community? What does it mean to record this pulse? What are the factors that go into measuring this? Similar to a human body, the MICA community has a pulse that we can attempt to record and understand through placing sensors at unique locations on campus. The pulse tells us not only about moments of activity but also moments to rest and transition, ultimately archiving a non-linear narrative of what it’s like to be here.

	Overview
Our Goal

The goals of this project are to present an interesting, safe, and open way of collecting data as a precedent to more data-driven works in the future, how can we redefine the scope of data collection to exist beyond surveys and site trackers? As a result, we have chosen to collect data in non-homogenous ways (pop-up events, 24/7 sensor station) to diversify the types and reactions to data collection. More importantly, how can we coax a playful engagement with the MICA community in an era of data paranoia? Seeing the people behind data collection humanizes the often alienated process of data collection, and perhaps art and design may help us foster a better relationship between people and digital interfaces.

Additionally, we are exploring the longevity and life cycle of our sensors/data. Since our data is collected from MICA students, it should belong to MICA students. When our current project is finished, we will open up this collection of sensors and data points to future MICA students to pursue data-driven projects.

The MICAVIBE project was wholly designed and built by students in the Spring 2019 Interactive Spaces class in the Interactive Arts department at MICA. The class was: Blythe Thea Williams, Cheng Qin, Gary Zhang, Heerim Shin, Jess Sanders, Laurain Park, Miri Kim, Peter Turnbull, Serah Choi, and Yeri Choi.

Dione Lee was the teaching assistant and Adam Bachman was the instructor. The code for the project is at http://github.com/micais2019/interactive-spaces and the code for this site is at https://github.com/micais2019/MICAVIBE.

	Process
Hardware and software

We began by building physical data-collection stations and developing custom code that could capture students’ responses in real time. To explore different emotional and sensory inputs, we designed four distinct data stations: Mood, Sound, Motion, and Love. Each station invited students to interact voluntarily, allowing us to gather diverse forms of qualitative and quantitative data directly from the MICA community.

Mood Station
A mood station was installed at Cafe Doris, designed with simple buttons and colors. It posed a straightforward question: "What color are you feeling today?", allowing MICA students to express their feelings through color selection. The collected data was then visualized and transformed into a cover material, representing the emotional trends of the participants.

After collecting the data, we began visualizing the results and translating them into graphic expressions.
The data sets from each station were used as the foundation for designing a series of book covers,
treating data as both material and narrative.

Final output
Book DesignThe collected data was transformed into visual systems that generated 68,000 unique book covers for the Maryland Institute College of Art Prospectus. Each cover used the Mood, Sound, Motion, and Love data as graphic inputs — resulting in a publication where every copy reflected a different student’s interactions.

	Craft Seoul X Gallery Woong
In May 2023, Gallery Woong participated in Craft Seoul with a total of nine exhibition rooms, taking on the role of a curator for Hall C, one of the three halls (A, B, and C). Collaborating with eight artists, we curated and designed nine exhibition rooms. As an Associate Director, I oversaw the entire exhibition for Gallery Woong, leading the overall planning and execution of the showcase. This exhibition took place at "Sinsa House", a former residential space that was transformed into a cultural venue before its final demolition. By revitalizing an abandoned old building, the exhibition breathed new life into the space, turning it into a site for artistic expression.

	Overview
Background

Craft Seoul took place at "Sinsa House," a space that had been transformed into a cultural complex before its final demolition. Within this repurposed venue, Gallery Woong curated and managed the entire Hall C, one of the three buildings used for the exhibition. With Craft Seoul focusing primarily on craft-based works, Gallery Woong aimed to create a dialogue between Korean contemporary art and traditional Korean craftsmanship. Showcasing works by eight artists, each assigned to a distinct space, the exhibition demonstrated that even in an abandoned, soon-to-be-demolished building, Korean contemporary art and craft could come alive and resonate with visitors.

Research Insight
01 Space Limitation
Due to the spatial characteristics of a one-room space, it is challenging to create a clear movement flow. The limited and narrow space increases the risk of artwork damage if too many people gather in one area. Therefore, it is essential to establish a well-defined flow of movement to ensure smooth circulation within the space.
02 Unsuitable InteriorAs a pre-demolition building, the walls are uneven and not well-maintained. The floor has a noticeable slope, making it unsuitable for placing installation works in a stable manner.

“How might we effectively utilize the limitations of the venue and space to create a more immersive experience by displaying artworks room by room, allowing visitors to engage with each piece individually?”

Project Goal
01 Activate a neglected architectural space through curatorial direction and spatial experience design.

02 Design nine distinct exhibition rooms that highlight each artist’s practice while maintaining a coherent overall theme.03 Overcome spatial limitations such as narrow stairs, uneven floors, and fragmented rooms by rethinking circulation and visitor flow.04 Encourage interaction between space and artwork, allowing visitors to reinterpret the abandoned building through artistic perspectives.05 Create a multi-layered exhibition experience that connects eight artists, nine rooms, and one unified curatorial vision.

Final outputAudience-Centered Curation StrategyAnticipating that the audience of the craft fair would consist of a wide range of age groups and interest levels, we designed the exhibition with broad accessibility in mind. To engage both general visitors and art enthusiasts, we curated a diverse range of mediums—from ceramics, painting, and sculpture to photography.
We also intentionally included artists with figurative and playful styles that could appeal to younger visitors and families with children, ensuring that the exhibition remained approachable without compromising artistic depth.

Reframing the Space Through Scent Design

To challenge the preconception that an abandoned building might feel uncomfortable or unwelcoming, we incorporated scent design as part of the curatorial strategy. I invited a professional olfactory curator to create a custom fragrance for the space. By adding a soft scent that evoked cleanliness and warmth, we aimed to shift the audience’s emotional response from “an old building” to “an artistic venue with a new identity.”

Using Sound to Redefine Space
In Heesu Suh’s room, we did not turn on additional lights, as the artist’s work itself used light as the main medium. However, the naturally dark atmosphere of the old building risked making visitors feel uneasy. To compensate for this visual limitation, we introduced sound only in this room, playing calm and peaceful music. This shifted the audience’s focus from the space to the artwork itself and transformed the mood into a quiet, immersive experience. Through this process, I learned how audio can function as a curatorial tool to balance spatial perception.

What I gained through this exhibition

01 Curatorial Insight – Designing for AccessibilityExhibition design is not just about artworks—it is about the visitor’s experience. I learned how to curate with audience diversity in mind, planning for different age groups, interests, and levels of artistic knowledge. Balancing artistic quality with accessibility became a core curatorial strategy.

02 Spatial Problem-SolvingWorking in an abandoned residential space taught me to adapt to physical constraints such as narrow stairs, uneven floors, and irregular room sizes. I developed spatial sensitivity—understanding how circulation, height, and sightlines affect the visitor’s journey. I realized that the character of a space can become part of the storytelling when treated as a curatorial element.
03 Multi-Artist Collaboration & CommunicationManaging 8 artists and 9 rooms required clear communication and coordination. I learned how to align different artistic directions under a unified curatorial vision. Through this process, I strengthened my ability to negotiate, problem-solve, and make decisions under time pressure.
04 Leadership & Project OwnershipAs Associate Director, I had to oversee the exhibition from concept to installation. This experience reinforced the importance of decision-making, delegation, and pace control across multiple teams. I gained confidence in leading a project end-to-end, rather than only executing one part of it.
05 The Value of Space ActivationThis experience made me realize that “the worst space can create the best experience. I discovered the potential of unused or abandoned architecture and became deeply interested in how space can be reinterpreted and reactivated through design.
